Parasites
Why we check every fish—so you don’t have to worry.
Not all pond problems are visible to the naked eye. Some of the biggest threats to koi health are microscopic—parasitesthat can quickly spread and compromise an entire collection if left unchecked.
At Robert’s Koi Farm, we take this seriously. Robert uses a microscope to routinely examine fish for parasites, something that sets our farm apart and gives our customers peace of mind.
Common Parasites That Affect Koi
Here are just a few of the parasites we watch for:
Costia – A tiny flagellate that causes excessive mucus, clamped fins, and lethargy. Often deadly if untreated.
Trichodina – Disk-shaped parasites that irritate the skin and gills. Common in cooler water and overcrowded ponds.
Flukes (Gill & Skin) – These flatworms attach to the gills or skin, causing respiratory issues, flashing, and rubbing.
Ich (White Spot Disease) – Caused by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, it shows up as white spots on the skin and fins, and spreads quickly.
Most of these parasites require microscopic diagnosis to catch early. That’s why every koi on our farm is monitored, tested, and treated if necessary—before it ever goes up for sale.
Why This Matters
Many sellers rely on visual checks only. The problem? By the time you can see clear signs of a parasite infection, it’s often too late—or it’s already been passed to other fish.
Robert uses his microscope to examine skin scrapes and gill samples during quarantine and before listing koi for sale. This level of care ensures that the fish you bring home have been given every advantage to stay healthy and strong.
Trust, Not Guesswork
We’re not in the business of rushing fish out the door. We take the time to do things right—clean ponds, strict quarantine, and proper diagnostics. When you buy from Robert’s Koi Farm, you can trust that your koi have been raised with attention to detail and a genuine commitment to quality.
No shortcuts. No guesswork. Just good, clean koi.
