Understanding Koi Scale Types
At Robert’s Koi Farm, one of the most fascinating parts of choosing koi is discovering the different scale and skin types that give each fish its own unique appearance and personality.
Wagoi
Wagoi are traditional fully scaled koi. Their even, complete scaling creates a classic and timeless appearance admired throughout the koi world.
Doitsu
Doitsu koi are mostly scaleless, often featuring a clean row of larger scales along the dorsal line or sides. Their smooth skin allows colours and patterns to appear especially bold and crisp.
Ginrin
Ginrin koi feature sparkling reflective scales that shimmer like diamonds in the sunlight. These koi add movement, brilliance, and energy to the pond.
Pearl
Pearl Ginrin have a softer, pearl-like sparkle compared to traditional Ginrin. The effect is elegant, refined, and especially eye-catching in natural light.
Metallic (Hikari)
Metallic koi display a luminous metallic sheen across the skin, almost as if the fish were glowing. Popular metallic varieties include Kujaku, Hariwake, and Ogon.
Matsuba
Matsuba koi have a distinctive pinecone-like reticulation pattern, where darker centres appear within each scale. This creates depth and texture throughout the body.
Fukurin
Fukurin refers to the visible reticulation between scales that creates a quilted or netted appearance. Highly valued on large mature koi, Fukurin gives the fish added texture and elegance.
Why Scale Types Matter
Scale type dramatically changes how a koi looks in the water. Some create sparkle and brilliance, while others emphasize clean colour, texture, or contrast. Together, they add diversity, movement, and personality to the pond.
At Robert’s Koi Farm, we carefully select koi with a wide variety of beautiful scale and skin types so every pond can have its own unique character.
